CHAPTER 11 「The NonAll, or, the Ontology of Sexual Difference」には、ラカンの「性関係はない」が二種類あることの指摘がある。“il n'y a pas de rapport sexuel to il y a du nonrapport (sexuel),”――これは、カントの「否定判断」と「無限判断」の違いとされる。

in late Lacan from “il n'y a pas de rapport sexuel” to “il y a du non‐rapport (sexuel),” a shift which precisely fits Kant's distinction between negative judgment (the negation of a predicate) and infinite judgment (the affirmation of a non‐predicate). (……)

It is easy to see how this passage from “there is no relationship” to “there is a non‐relationship” evokes the Kantian passage from negative to infinite judgment: “he is not dead” is not the same as “he is undead,” just as “there is no relationship” is not the same as “there is a non‐relationship.” The importance of this passage, with regard to sexual difference, is that, if we stop at “there is no sexual relationship” as our ultimate horizon, we remain in the traditional space of the eternal struggle between the two sexes. Even Jacques‐Alain Miller sometimes sounds like this—when, for example, he reads “there is no sexual relationship” along the lines of “male with regard to female is not like a key which fits its lock,” as a simple assertion of disharmony in contrast to harmony.

あるいは「男性」の否定は「女性」だがall (all elements of the human species) that is notman is woman,”、「女性」の否定は「男性」ではないall that is not woman is not man(つまり女性は非-全体だから、否定判断ではなく無限判断となる)とされるのは、男性の論理、女性の論理のロジックからいえば、当然なのだろうが、こうやって整理してもらうと改めてあり難く思う。

In a purely differential relationship, each entity consists in its difference from its opposite: woman is notman and man is notwoman. Lacan's complication with regard to sexual difference is that, while one may claim that all (all elements of the human species) that is notman is woman, the nonAll of woman precludes us from saying that all that is notwoman is man: there is something of notwoman which is not man; or, as Lacan put it succinctly: since woman is nonall,' why should all that is not woman be man?”44 The two sexes do not divide the human gender among themselves so that what is not one is the other: while this holds for the masculine side (what is not man is woman), it does not hold for the feminine side (all that is not woman is not man)

Once we pass to there is a nonrelationship, even this kind of Heraclitean unity/harmony in conflict is left behind, since masculine and feminine are no longer symmetrical opposite poles: one of them (feminine) contains its own negation and thus breaks out of the confines of the oppositionnotwoman is not man, but the abyss of notwoman within the feminine, as the undead remain within the domain of the dead (as the living dead).

そして、ジジェクの「否定判断」と「無限判断」の解釈は、手許に和訳がある『ラカンはこう読め』から抜き出そう(『レス・ザン・ナッシング』におけるwoman is not man, but the abyss of notwoman within the feminine, as the undead remain within the domain of the dead (as the living dead).》をめぐる)。

Meaning is an affair of hermeneutics(解釈学), Sense is an affair of interpretation(解釈)とされつつ、前者が男性の論理、後者が女性の論理とされる、Meaning belongs to the level of All, while Sense is non‐All……Lacan's notion of interpretation is thus opposed to hermeneutics: it involves the reduction of meaning to the signifier's nonsense, not the unearthing of a secret meaning.

あるいは前期ウィトゲンシュタインと後期ウィトゲンシュタイン(家族的類似性)もしかり。in Wittgenstein: the passage from early to late Wittgenstein is the passage from All (the order of the universal All grounded in its constitutive exception) to non‐All (the order without exception and for that reason non‐universal, non‐All).…… The notion of language as a system defined by a set of universal features is replaced by the notion of language as a multitude of dispersed practices loosely interconnected by “family resemblances.”

③『LESS THAN NOTHINGは、約3,220,000文字

《…Winston Churchill's wellknown paradox. Responding to those detractors of democracy who saw it as a system that paved the way for corruption, demagogy, and a weakening of authority, Churchill said: "It is true that democracy is the worst of all possible systems; the problem is that no other system would be better." That sentence is based on the logic of "everything possible and then some." Its first premise gives us the overall grouping of "all possible systems" within which the questioned element (democracy) appears to be the worst. The second premise states that the grouping "all possible systems" is not allinclusive, and that compared to additional elements, the element in question turns out to be quite bearable. The procedure plays on the fact that additional elements are the same as those included in the overall "all possible systems," the only difference being that they no longer function as elements of a closed totality In relation to the totality of systems of government, democracy is the worst; but, within the nontotalized series of political systems, none would be better. Thus, from the fact that "no system would be better," we cannot therefore conclude that democracy is "the best"—its advantage is strictly limited to the comparative. As soon as we attempt to formulate the proposition in the superlative, the qualification of democracy is inverted into "the worst."》
